3 Ways to Add Fun and Flair to Holiday Floral Arrangements

1200-by-800_0001_10_01054_holiday2014_hr31 It can be fun and easy to design floral arrangements filled with holiday cheer. Experimenting with whimsical decorative accents adds flair to traditional designs and a playful spirit to a designer’s hectic workday. The holiday season can feel like a gift to the five senses of a floral designer. Surrounded by fragrant holiday greens, colorful decorations, joyful music, festive foods and a magical mix of design materials, one can even find pleasure in the dash to meet decorating or delivery deadlines. How can we translate the joy we experience creating a design to the pleasure a recipient feels when receiving it? These cheerful designs, created by Smithers-Oasis design directors, illustrate adding fun and flair to holiday arrangements in three simple ways.

1. Use color to catch the eye

Say ‘Merry Christmas’ with a bold red and bright green mix like this eye-catching color combination. For many people, red is the favorite hue of festive designs made for these red letter days. How can we use this traditional color in nontraditional ways? While the arrangement above is cute and compact, the happy flower faces of it’s red gerbera daisies, carnations, and hypericum give it a really big look. Other traditional holiday flower favorites such as roses, amaryllis, or alstroemeria could be used for this design style as well. The simple technique of encircling its container with a trendy green band of OASIS™ Raw Muslin and adding a flourish of red OASIS™ Button Wire can really button up a new look in updated style. At times, the addition of a decorative accessory adds not only the desired color but introduces a new form as well.

2. Add flair with decorative accents

hr4webjpg If you’re exploring ways to add form and flair to your traditional designs, start by creating duplicate copies of your favorite basic arrangement. Experiment with various decorative accents on each design to see how an arrangement evolves based on the use of floral accessory. For example, this basic carnation arrangement designed in an ESSENTIALS™ Square Bowl, gains new height and visual energy with the addition of OASIS™ Flat Cane and OASIS™ Aluminum Wire circles over the top. As shown in additional photos, OASIS™ Midollino Sticks or OASIS™ Flat Wire can also be used to expand the space of smallish designs. In the candle centerpiece photo below, LOMEY™ Diamante Pins were used to accessorize the pillar candle in this photo with dots of color. Decorative accessories can be used to create form within a design, but they can also be used to create visual interest by drawing the eye to the container.

A popular design style this season is a massed collection of smaller flowers. In the photo below, the sweet look of this simple combination of red spray roses, miniature pinecones and bits of pine packs an extra punch once its container has been dressed with a look of peppermint. 1200-by-800_0008_45_00852_holiday2012_hr5 Adhere UGLU™ Adhesive to attach a simple round glass vase and attach rings of OASIS™ Diamond Wire to create this festive candy cane effect. ECOssentials Cylinders are also great basic containers that are easy to accessorize.
