Our Commitment to Sustainability

Smithers-Oasis is committed to contributing to the sustainability of the earth we live on and the people and communities we serve globally. Consistent with our dedication to social responsibility, we recognize the environment requires thoughtful stewardship and accountability to preserve it for future generations.

As a leader in the floral industry, our commitment is long term. We look for ways to be an increasingly sustainable company. We will continue to introduce innovative and environmentally friendly floriculture products and programs that increase the sustainability of our planet.

Focus on Three Sustainability Areas

The Smithers-Oasis Sustainability Program addresses people, planet and prosperity. We’ve made progress in all of these areas and are actively reducing the environmental footprint of our production, distribution and administrative facilities. Recent examples include reformulating our flagship floral product OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife to be biodegradable and implementing energy-saving scheduling in our plants in North America.

Sustainability is about people. Smithers-Oasis Company promotes respect for individual employee by providing a healthy and safe work environment throughout our worldwide organization. We conduct ongoing safety training and regular onsite reviews of working conditions to ensure we meet and exceed all applicable labor codes. We support open and honest communications and dialogue as part of a inviting and rewarding work environment where personal and professional development is recognized and rewarded.

Creating environmentally friendly products through sustainable means is our goal. We are working to have as many of our products as possible to be reusable, recyclable and biodegradable and made from sustainable ingredients with reduced environmental impact.

In North America, all our glass and plastic products are recyclable. OASIS colored glass is created using water-based low-VOC paint. OASIS Floral Foam Maxlife with enhanced biodegradability and ECOssentials containers are biodegradable. OASIS Raw Muslin and Pastel Wraps are made from reclaimed materials and Flat Cane and Midollino use renewable natural materials.

Sustaining our organization means earning a profit and reasonable growth. We can only do that by creating products and services that help our customers and their customers prosper. This means providing beneficial products and programs, like our information resources for sustainable floristry.

Our Worldwide Presence

Smithers-Oasis Company is a leading global manufacturer and marketer of floral foam, floral accessories, postharvest products and propagation media for the floriculture marketplace.

Our Company founder, V.L. Smithers, invented the world's first water-absorbing floral foam in 1954, which revolutionized retail floristry. Over these years, OASIS® has become one of the most trusted and well-known brands in the industry.

In 1938, the first flower food was developed and introduced by Floralife, Inc. Since that time, our Floralife® brand of postharvest products has led the industry in the care and handling of cut flowers.

And our OASIS® brand growing media products provide technologically advanced, sterile propagation media (rooting systems) for nourishing and growing vegetative annuals, perennials and plants.

Our customers and partners include florists, growers, wholesalers, floral design schools, mass market retailers and bouquet manufacturers throughout the world. With sales offices, distribution and manufacturing facilities located in over 20 countries, we understand that our actions are viewed by a global audience and we are committed to conducting ourselves responsibly in all matters.

Our Commitment to Local Communities

Our strength is built on local relationships, wherever we are in the world. With locations in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, our employees serve as our regional experts, providing insight on local cultures and needs. Also important, our employees around the world are encouraged to become actively involved in local projects and programs within their communities, often with Smithers-Oasis assisting these efforts. Examples include helping to build a primary school in Malaysia after the devastating Tsunami in the year 2004, and matching, dollar-for-dollar, employee donations to the American Red Cross following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in the United States in 2005.

Environmental Statement

Over the years, we have worked hard to lessen our footprint on the planet. When it comes to the environment, our actions have always been to align ourselves with all local regulatory requirements. We support this promise to environmental stewardship throughout our organization.

Research and Technology

Our research and technology teams collaborate with our global suppliers to develop our raw materials and specifications. Our ongoing commitment to the highest production standards includes Lean Manufacturing Practices and elimination of waste, which provide operational efficiencies that benefit our company, customers and the environment.

Floral Foam Products

Our floral foam is based on inert phenolic resin technology, the same chemistry used for the handles of kitchen cookware. When made into cellular floral foam, our resin is fully polymerized and reacted with only small traces of free acid (much lower than cola beverage products) which may be neutralized by adding water.

Smithers-Oasis was the first in our industry to eliminate the use of freon from floral foam production. Moreover, we've successfully reduced our volatile organic compound emissions (VOCs) by more than 85 percent over the past 25 years.

In addition, some OASIS® Floral Foams offer enhanced biodegradability. We include the word “enhanced” because they require more than 365 days to fully biodegrade. Rates of biodegradation vary depending on the location of production, because raw materials and formulations vary. All claims regarding biodegradability have been tested following ASTM D5511 for biologically active landfill conditions. Repeated testing has been conducted by an independent, certified, testing laboratory. Contact your local OASIS® Floral Products supplier to identify the floral foams with enhanced biodegradability and their specific rates of biodegradation.

Post-Harvest Products

Our postharvest products are specially formulated to maintain an optimal environment for cut flowers by adjusting the water pH for maximum uptake, providing a source of energy for the flower, and keeping the flower stems open and free flowing.

Grower Products

Our growing media are both cellular and organic, and are well aerated and designed for optimal callus formation and root development. All OASIS® growing media are engineered products that meet our rigorous quality standards.

We stand by the following commitments:

We will continue to maintain a standard of compliance with all applicable environmental laws in every country where we operate.

We will continue to research our products to find additional ways to reuse, recycle and reinvent our products to reduce our footprint on the environment.

We will continually set new objectives for improving our environmental performance and reducing the environmental footprint of our operations and our processes.

Our Commitment to the Industry

We are dedicated to supporting the floriculture industry in many ways, particularly by building relationships with florists, floral designers and growers around the world. We achieve this through the support of floral design schools, participation in trade events, the development of an Internet resource (www.oasisfloral.com), cooperation with non-profit organizations for floriculture research and development, and the creation of a wide variety of in-house publications for educational and inspirational purposes. Through Design Directors and Ambassadors, we provide educational programs in many countries with the goal of inspiring new florists and equipping them for tomorrow's needs.

We pledge our continuing support to the industry by:

- developing innovative, solutions-oriented products based on customers' needs
- committing resources to educating a new generation of florists and growers
- supporting industry-specific programs and organizations
- championing continuous improvements in manufacturing through Lean principles that are shared with our industry partners
